CART (Communications Access Realtime Translation)
The first, and most important, step is to ASK the client about their accommodation needs.
CART is the real time translation of the spoken word into English text using a stenotype machine, a laptop computer and real time software. CART is typically used by people who are non-signers. They may be late-deafened, oral deaf, hard-of-hearing or they may have cochlear implants. With CART services, the captionist is on-site. The captionist listens to what is being said and then types a word-for-word transcript similar to real time captioning. The text is then projected on a computer monitor, large screen or other display. CART services work extremely well in classroom, court room and large meeting room settings or in places where no Internet or phone connection is available. All of our captionists are certified by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) in either the Certified CART Provider Program (CCP) or the Registered Professional Reporter Program (RPR). For more information about NCRA accreditation, please visit our FAQs page.
